Earlier, there were reports that Juan Martin del Potro was set to undergo his third surgery on his knee. This could have effectively sidelined him until the end of the year. In light of this, British tennis player Andy Murray spoke to ESPN about the injured Argentine and offered his support, like many others.

The Scotsman confessed that he does not know the specifics of del Potro’s kneecap surgery. However, he was gutted for the 31-year-old and even entertained reaching out to him in a show of support.

Murray said, “He’s been unbelievably unlucky during his career with multiple, multiple injuries. He keeps, yeah, trying and keeps wanting to come back to play.”

The former World No. 1 confessed that he understood and sympathized with what del Potro is going through. He knows that such an ordeal will be extremely challenging for the Argentine on a mental level.

Andy Murray concluded, “Yeah, I hope that the surgery is a success for him. I hope he manages to get healthy again and back on the court. If he didn’t totally love tennis, there’s no chance he would have kept trying.

“He obviously loves the sport. It would be brilliant to see him get a few more years out of his body because he deserves that.”

Truthfully, Andy Murray knows what it feels like to go under the knife and get sidelined for a long time. In 2018, he underwent rehabilitation due to a troublesome hip injury but later elected to go for a surgery.

That injury continued to plague him throughout the year, and he even contemplated retirement in 2019. After another hip surgery, Murray defied the odds and returned to professional tennis in June. Since then, he has had a handful of appearances in various tennis tournaments.

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced him to make limited appearances, as has been the case with several other tennis stars. However, he is competing in the 2020 US Open.
