The governing body of men’s tennis ATP has extended its suspension period until June 7, 2020, amid COVID-19 pandemic. By doing so, the European clay-court swing has been called off which includes the second Grand Slam of the year, French Open.

As of now, the tournaments starting on June 8, 2020, will take place as per the schedule. Taking the ATP rankings into the account, the men’s tennis tour has decided to freeze the rankings for each player.

As ATP won’t drop any points beginning from Sunshine Double, on resuming the tour on June 7 players will restart their tennis venture with the points earned until March 8, 2020.

Novak Djokovic

World Number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, clinched the title in Dubai and he earned 10,220 ATP points.

He’ll probably restart his season on the Stuttgart or s-Hertogenbosch’s grass. They host an ATP 250 tournament. Later he might play at Queens and then defend his title at Wimbledon 2020.

Rafael Nadal

The Spaniard ace Rafael Nadal will restart the tour with his World Number two ranking and he’ll have 9,850 points on resumption.

It’s disappointing for Rafa to miss the entire clay season and directly bounce on the grass-courts. He may plan to play in Stuttgart or s-Hertogenbosch upon the restart of the season. Also, he may include Queens Championships in his agenda and then fly to London for the grass-court major.

Dominic Thiem’s ATP ranking

The new World Number three Dominic Thiem did not play any match as the third-best player in the world. Last year, he began his grass season directly at Wimbledon after playing the French Open finals.

But, Thiem was round one upset at English major. This year it will be interesting to see where would Thiem resume his season. 

Roger Federer

The Swiss legend, Roger Federer called off his tennis season in February for a few weeks amidst a knee surgery. Certainly, Federer has benefitted the most from the untimely break.

In February, he was all prepared to leave the top five rankings, once he resumed the season in June. But now with ATP freezing the rankings, the Swiss maestro will be ranked World Number four once he returns to the tour with full fitness.

Federer will resume his season at Halle Open 2020 as the defending champion.

Daniil Medvedev

The Russian machine Daniil Medvedev will be ranked World Number five with 5,890 points. At present, he is just 65 points behind World number four Federer and can surpass Federer if he chooses to play the ATP 250 event (provided Federer doesn’t play and win before he does) and win a handful of matches there. 

ATP rankings on June 8, 2020
