Stan Wawrinka to Follow Rafael Nadal; Set To Miss US Open 2020

Former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka has hinted that he won’t be traveling to US Open this year. The Swiss star was spotted practicing on the clay courts. That pretty much reflected his travel plan for the upcoming European clay-court tournaments.
It suggested the certainties of Wawrinka missing US Open and restarting his tennis tour on the European clay. Also, he was using this year’s edition of Roland Garros’ balls. In 2020, the French Major will be using Wilson balls, as Babolat decided to terminate its 8-year-old partnership with the French Open in 2019.
Not just World Number 17 Wawrinka, most European players are thinking of avoiding travel to the US this year and resume their season in Europe itself. By missing US Open this year, Stan won’t lose any ranking points, as this year the ATP has introduced changes in the system.

Furthermore, Spaniard ace Rafael Nadal has announced his participation at Madrid Open 2020 and has begun with his training on clay. The Spanish Masters tournament is just one day after the conclusion of US Open 2020, hence the defending champion is expected to miss the title defense at the Flushing Meadows Major.

However, last year’s finalist at the French Open, Dominic Thiem, is considering traveling to the US Open.

“I hope the next is the US Open. I am still not sure a 100% that it is going to happen. But the plan is to go there in the middle of August and if this is happening.”
Also, the Austrian won’t be missing his favorite tournament the French Open in Paris. After the hardcourt Slam in New York Thiem would quickly make a transition to clay.
