Mutua Madrid Open 2020 On The Verge of Its Cancelation

On Thursday, Italian Open or the Rome Masters’ stated they would hold this year’s tournament behind the closed doors. On the contrary, Mutua Madrid Open 2020 in Spain announced to host the tournament with 30 percent of spectators.
However, the situation right now has put the event in danger as Deputy Minister of Public Health sent a letter to tournament director Feliciano Lopez. The letter mentioned it is unwise to hold the scheduled event in September. Consequently, it indicates the cancelation of the event or a warning given to the event.
“It is inadvisable to hold the tournament on September 2020, due to the aforementioned health risk that it would pose to both the public and the organization and the players,” stated the letter from Deputy Minister of Public Health Antonio Zapatero. (As quoted by Marca).

Also, the health committee has asked the tournament to make the ‘most appropriate decision shortly.’ They are yet to decide regarding the same.
As of now, the tournament is scheduled to be held from September 12 to 20. Also, former champion and World Number two Rafael Nadal has announced his participation in the tournament. Eventually, the Spaniard will not fly to the US to defend his crown in New York, he will be focusing on the European clay-court tour.

Previously Lopez addressed the Government of Madrid was delighted by their strict protocols in terms of safety for players and fans. But right now, the tournament has to reconsider their earlier statements. Spain was one of the hardest-hit nations by the coronavirus, however, at present, there are no active cases.
