“Very Sad News” – Rafael Nadal on Serena Williams’ Unfortunate Withdrawal From French Open 2020

The tennis world was waiting excitedly to enjoy the clash between Serena Williams and Tsvetana Pironkova at French Open 2020. Unfortunately, with Williams’ still tackling the pain in her achilles tendon, she was compelled to pull out from the Grand Slam event and pack her bags to return home. Just like the tennis fans all around the globe, World Number two Rafael Nadal felt it was a wretched moment in the sport.

When asked about the seriousness of Serena’s injury, Rafa refused to elaborate upon the same. However, he addressed his sympathy for her and wished her luck to come back stronger.

“I really don’t like to talk about things that I don’t know very well. I don’t want to speculate how bad is the injury or not. Of course, is very sad news for tennis, for Roland Garros, and especially for her,” he said.

“Sorry for her. I just can wish her a fast and good recovery. Is true that all the comebacks are tough, especially when you get a little bit older every time is more difficult, no? She showed amazing passion for this sport. I really believe that she will be good in the next couple of months.”

While pulling out from the Major event, Williams revealed she was struggling to walk, and picking up a tennis racquet was far from her imagination. Presently, she has decided to take a break from tennis for four to six weeks and spend her time on recovery.

In the first round of Roland Garros, Williams survived a tight first against compatriot Kristie Ahn. Later in the second set, she bagel’d Ahn, not showing any mercy and bagged her first win in Paris in 2020.

Moving further, after getting a free ticket to the round of 32 at French Open 2020, Tsvetana Pironkova will take on the Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova. She’ll continue to ace her return to tennis post her three-year-long hiatus.

Pironkova vs Williams match up would have been interesting to watch at Roland Garros, as it was a few weeks ago in New York. The two talented mothers on the WTA Tour had put up a fascinating three-set battle in New York at US Open 2020.
