World Number 56  Feliciano Lopez is presently playing the event at Ultimate Tennis Showdown. He addressed the near-future scenario of the tennis tour amid the crisis due to the pandemic. He is also the Tournament Director of the Madrid Open event in Spain. Lopez believes from now on, tennis will be deviating from its normal. 

The tournaments will be cutting down upon the prize money this year. Sponsors won’t be investing a mammoth sum of money on the tennis events due to the global recession period.

“We have to understand that tennis is not going to be the same, at least for one, two, three years. I don’t know how long. The companies and the sponsors, they might have to fire employees,” he said.

“This is happening everywhere in the world so the first thing they cut is sponsorship. And this is going to be affecting tennis massively,” he continued.

“We need to survive this moment and we need to be united. The players need to understand that it’s going to be a significant reduction in the prize money.” Lopez believes the curtailed spending by tournaments will also continue in the year 2021 or until the time economy revives.

A few days ago, he also revealed the wellbeing of his friend, the legend Andy Murray. Lopez said he’s optimistic about handling five-set long tennis matches and considering playing the US Open 2020. Also, when the tennis tour was initially called off, the Brit was preparing to get ready for the French Open 2020.
