After her shabby run in the second half of the 2019 season, Angelique Kerber managed to get some match wins under her belt during the Australian summer this year. Nevertheless, the German pride Kerber certainly has some big goals for the 2020 season and she unveiled them. 

It’s a big year in the sporting world with the Tokyo Olympics coming up. And Kerber will be more focused for the quadrennial event. As per the German publication Suddeutsche Zeitung, she is willing to be the flag-bearer of Germany at the Tokyo Games’ opening ceremony. 

“Tokyo is very important, it would be my third games,” the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist Kerber stated. “When I was in London, I had goosebumps at the opening. I also went to the opening four years ago. And I will do it this year too. Even if I play the next day. This feeling of running out for Germany is unique,” she added.

She further reflected on carrying the German flag at the Tokyo Olympics 2020’s opening ceremony. In the 2012 London Olympics, the female field hockey player Natascha Keller carried the German flag, then in 2016, Timo Boll a male table tennis player received the honor.

If the three-time Grand Slam champion Kerber receives that honor, another female athlete from Germany will get that golden opportunity. Certainly, numerous elite athletes from different nations do not receive that privilege. 

She seems excited to carry the German flag. “Let’s see who carries the flag. I would love to do that. That would be a great honor,” she said.

Kerber spoke about Zverev

At the Olympics, she is willing to compete in singles, doubles and mixed disciplines and she desires to share the court with her ace compatriot Alexander Zverev. They played together at the Hopman Cup and were successful. “The Hopman Cup with him was fun,” Kerber added about Zverev.

“I want to focus on the big tournaments” – Angelique Kerber

This year World Number 20 Kerber won’t be playing many tournaments, rather she is planning focus on the big ones. Eventually, it will give her a boost to prepare well for the Tokyo Games.

“I want to focus on the big tournaments. I want to play and win well. And I would also like to decrease the number of tournaments. My experience is so far that I no longer have to play 30 tournaments and absolutely need this match practice. I will do this year,” she said.
