The Volvo Car Open in Charleston is a popular WTA event that has been held since 1973. Unfortunately, this year, it had to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many people were unhappy about this, which is why they decided to hold an exhibition tennis tournament. This was a huge success, and the organizers learned a lot from it. In a recent interview, the Tournament Director said:

“For us it really allowed us to see what this was all about and when I say that…What the return time was on testing, working with hotels, and making sure that hotels created a safe atmosphere.”

After hosting a successful exhibition event in the middle of a pandemic, the organizers of the Volvo Car Open feel confident about hosting the event in 2021 and said, “We took so many different steps and did so many different things, and tested a lot of different things, that really we felt really good coming out of that…Moving into 2021, I can tell you we have a 90-page binder from the WTA that is as thorough as any playbook I’ve ever looked at about how we move forward in 2021.”
