The first Romanian player to win Wimbledon singles title, Simona Halep hails from a country where there are no grass-courts. Despite lacking her practice in her past, the most-consistent women on the tour, Halep took out the seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams in the last year’s championship match. The Romanian just needed 56-minutes in the finals to lift her second major crown.
But sadly, the 2020 edition of The Championships won’t take place amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Leading to the same, World Number two Halep addressed her thoughts to ‘The Times.’
“The coronavirus is like nothing we have ever faced before. It’s important to remember that tennis is not important in comparison to this life-threatening opponent. I made a donation for medical equipment in hospitals and I urge anyone with the financial means to do the same,” Simona Halep said.

“I will miss going back to see Centre Court, the scene of that amazing final last year and I will miss seeing my name on the wall and all the nice things you get as a member of the club. I will miss the grass, a surface I finally fell in love with and I will miss wearing white. And I will miss the feeling of belonging. At least I get to be a reigning Wimbledon champion for two years.”

The Wimbledon Championships were previously canceled during the two World Wars, i.e., from 1915-18 and 1940-45. Since 1945, the most prestigious tennis tournament has been canceled for the very first time. Also, as far as the Grand Slams are concerned, Wimbledon is the first major event to be annulled in 2020.
French Open 2020 has been rescheduled in the month of September, which is seven days after the conclusion of the US Open in New York, USA.
