US Open set a very special record this year. For the first time in the history of the tournament, three mothers earned a spot in the quarterfinals, namely, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Tsvetana Pironkova. Initially, the tournament hosted nine mothers in the main draw that included four-time Grand Slam Kim Clijsters.

Belgian ace Clijsters played some warrior-like tennis against 21st seed Ekaterina Alexandrova at Flushing Meadows. Unfortunately, she conceded a three-set defeat.

Now, with tennis players continuing their season at the European clay-court tour, Clijsters has decided to skip the entire season. As a result, she has withdrawn from Italian Open and French Open 2020. She will utilize the long break to train and upgrade her skills while fulfilling her parental duties.

Kim Clijsters’ statement

“I have had many firsts and exciting matches on clay in my career and they all hold special memories for me. Good luck to all the players and tournaments,” Kim Clijsters announced on Twitter.

“I have decided to spend the next few weeks with my family. NYC showed how much progress I’ve made & also what I need to work on. Not sure where I’ll play next but will let you know soon. For now, back to training & school lunches!”

The two-time Roland Garros finalist played one of the most phenomenal championship matches in the history of the tournament. In the year 2001, she faced Jennifer Capriati from the United States and lost 6–1, 4–6, 10–12. 

That day, she became the first Belgian to contest in a Grand Slam singles final. In 2003, she again reached the singles finals and lifted the champion’s trophy in the doubles domain.

Clijsters announced her comeback to tennis in December 2019, and she resumed her journey at Dubai Tennis Championships 2020 in February. In UAE, she lost to reigning Australian Open finalist Garbine Muguruza in her first comeback match.

Later, she flew to Monterrey, Mexico, and lost in the opening round to Britain’s Johanna Konta. Since the tour got suspended, she played a few exhibition matches in the US, which boosted her morale to compete on the professional circuits.
