WATCH: Tsvetana Pironkova Gets Emotional After Her Incredible Win at US Open 2020

The fairytale return to the sport for the tennis professional and mother Tsvetana Pironkova from Bulgaria is peaking on the WTA Tour.  She’s playing her first tournament after three long years and her game in New York, is gluing numerous tennis fans to their television screens. Her return at US Open 2020 surprised the tennis fraternity, also her straight-sets wins over tenth seed Garbine Muguruza dropped jaws in the tennis world.

She earned her way to the quarterfinals of the US Open by defeating French professional Alize Cornet in a dramatic three-set match. Up next, she plays her biggest match so far at Flushing Meadows against the six-time US Open champion and a mother Serena Williams.

While reflecting on her recent incredible run Tsvetana Pironkova got emotional while speaking about her son Alexander. It’s the first time she has been away from her two-year-old baby boy for two weeks, and she almost broke down during the on-court interview.

“I haven’t seen him in two weeks and it’s very tough. It gets tougher every day. But I know he’s watching, I know he’s proud of me. And it’s worth it.”

During the press conference, she reflected on her next match against Serena. The duo has previously locked horns four times and every time it was the American ace winning over the Bulgarian. However, the former World Number 31 Tsvetana Pironkova has defeated five-time Wimbledon champion and Serena’s sister, Venus Williams, in the quarterfinals of The Championships in 2010.

“Yeah, definitely a tough one. I played against Serena a few times. I haven’t won it today. Playing such a champion, such a legend of the game, it’s a tremendous honor, obviously. I’m really looking forward to that match because I know the feeling is going to be very special. Yeah, I will try to do my best, and I can’t wait,” she said.

The Arthur Ashe Stadium will witness the ‘Battle of the Mothers’ in the quarterfinals of the US Open wherein Serena and Tsvetana will be locking horns. Also, another mom Victoria Azarenka is through the quarterfinals and she will play Elise Mertens.

For the first time in US Open’s history, three mothers have managed to book their spots in the quarters of the event. Also, Vera Zvonareva who’s a mother is into the women’s doubles finals of US Open 2020.
