Nick Kyrgios Back to ‘Old-Nick’ Amid His Loss to Roberto Bautista Agut at ATP Cup 2020

The Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut took on the Aussie player Nick Kyrgios at ATP Cup 2020 semifinals. The second-highest ranked Spaniard Bautista Agut defeated Kyrgios 6-1, 6-4 in the first tie and gave Spain a 1-0 lead. Upon losing his service game in the second set Nick lost his temper. It was the first loss for Australia at the ATP Cup.

Set one

Bautista Agut made a quality start by holding his serve after a couple of deuces. Later Kyrgios committed a series of unforced errors gifted the Spaniard his service game. It was the second service game loss for Nick at ATP Cup.

The Australian continued to play a loose game and composed form of tennis from Bautista Agut gave him a 5-0 lead in the opening set.

The Aussie fans in the house were re-ignited after Kyrgios hit a few aces and sealed a game at 5-1. However, with Kyrgios’ 12 unforced errors the set had one-way traffic on Spain’s road.

Bautista Agut played an impressive game, he just committed two unforced errors and pulled off the set under 29 minutes followed by an ace.

Set two

Bautista Agut was simply controlling the tennis ball from behind the baseline and played very point with utter patience and composure. Kyrgios could produce holds in the set. The cheers and roars electrified the stadium each time Kyrgios won a point. The Spaniard benefitted as Kyrgios’ backhands were not up to the mark.

At 2-2 the Aussie produced two wide strokes which aided Agut to lead by a break at 3-2. Upon losing his serve Nick Kyrgios smashed his racquet and was given a code violation for racquet abuse. At present Kyrgios is on a probationary period. Later it seemed like he gave up on the match as he said “I’m done” out of frustration.

Australia’s first break point arose exactly after 60 minutes from the commencement of the play. Later Nick came up with a diving forehand shot around the net but he failed to convert break point as the ball was placed wide. Bautista Agut consolidated for 4-2 lead.

At 5-3 Australia was at the brink of their defeat. Nick saved two match points with aces and then held his serve at 5-4. However, on his serve, Bautista Agut closed out the match.
