During the off-season break in 2019, the Serbian ace Novak Djokovic confirmed his appearance at the ATP 250 event in Adelaide. He opted to play that tournament as a warm-up for the Australian Open 2020. However now World Number two Djokovic has changed his schedule and he has pulled out from Adelaide’s event.

It would have been his second tournament in ten years, where he would have been playing a week before a Grand Slam. Previously, he played at Eastbourne International 2017 which was prior to Wimbledon.

This week Novak Djokovic has played exhausting matches at the ATP Cup 2020. It’s a wise decision that he withdrew from Adelaide’s tournament. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have received a substantial amount of rest before the Australian Open 2020. This week he also traveled from Brisbane to Sydney for the knock-out ties at ATP Cup.

Shapovalov’s displeasure

In the quarterfinal tie against Denis Shapovalov, Djokovic retrieved from a set-down state and sealed a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) win. During that match, the Sydney stadium was resonating with “Nole, Nole, Nole” cheers and such roaring support from the audience made a tough pleasure for Novak.

“I mean, Brisbane we had amazing support – but this has taken it to a different level,” Djokovic said. “All the Serbian people came out today.”

Shapovalov taunted the crowd’s support for Djokovic and he also received a warning from the chair umpire for his reaction. “They were engaged – sometimes a little bit too much. Denis was rightfully annoyed at times, you know, with the sounds, but it was a Davis Cup-like atmosphere, really,” Djokovic elaborated. “I mean, ATP Cup brings this kind of opportunity for players to experience something they don’t experience in 90% of the tournaments.”
