2017 has been a vintage year, with the old guns dominating the season, and showing that they still have gas left in their tanks. Meanwhile, it has been a breakout year for the young guns as well, with the likes of Alexander Zverev, Denis Shapovalov and Nick Kyrgios, displaying some quality tennis. Players such as Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin, have taken complete advantage of the long injury list, to finally live up to their expectations. Similarly, the women’s division has also had many surprises. Jeļena Ostapenko, was the stand out performer of the year, while Simona Halep and Garbiñe Muguruza, have also had an equally successful year. We also saw a new champion at the flushing meadows in Sloane Stephens. In a nutshell it has been a year full of surprises. As the new season kicks off in three weeks’ time, we take a look at some of the Tennis records broken during the 2017 season.

Tennis Records Broken by Roger Federer

Roger Federer returned to professional tennis with a huge bang; as he went on to win the Australian open in dramatic fashion against his old nemesis Rafael Nadal. It was a record extending 18 title at the slams. He also became the first male player to win at least five singles titles at three different grand slam tournaments each. Federer also went on to win the Indian wells masters 1000 event, to capture a record equaling fifth title. In the process of winning the title at Indian wells, he became the oldest male player to reach the finals and win a masters’ 1000 title. He went on to extend that record at the Miami open, where he captured his third sunshine double. Federer went into the grass court season after a long break, as the clear favorite to win the title at the Wimbledon. He won a title at the Halle open, defending Alexander Zverev in the finals. In doing so, he extended his record at the Halle open, winning his ninth title. He also became only the second man to win the same title for more than eight times. He also equaled Rafael Nadal’s record of winning 18 masters’ 500 titles. Wimbledon, which has always been Federer’s favorite hunting ground, was a stroll in the park for Federer. He went in to the semifinals for a record breaking 12 time. He won the title at Wimbledon, extending his record for the most number of titles won at the majors. He also set the record for the highest number of men’s singles finals made at a single major (11). By winning Wimbledon, he set a record for the most number of titles at the Wimbledon, and qualified for the year-end ATP world tour finals for a record 15 time. Federer, went on to extend his record as the oldest player to win a masters’ 1000 event, in Shanghai, beating his nemesis Rafael Nadal for a fifth consecutive time.

Rafael Nadal’s equally satisfying year

Rafael Nadal’s year was equally satisfying, as he started of his season at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. He won a record fourth title here, beating David Goffin in the finals. In the absence of Federer, Nadal went on to win a record 10 title at the Monte Carlo open. In doing so, he became the first man to win the same title ten times. He also closed in on Novak Djokovic’s all time record of 30 ATP masters’ 1000 titles. Nadal went on to win the title at the Barcelona, extending his record and winning a record tenth title. He also set the record for most number of masters’ 500 titles (18). Nadal won the title at the Madrid open, equaling Novak Djokovic’s record of 30 masters’ 1000 titles. Nadal went into the French open as the strong favorite, with a long injury list and the absence of Roger Federer, who had decided to skip the entire clay court season. He won the title, defeating Stan Wawrinka, in straight sets, to become the first man in the open era to win 10 majors at the same tournament. Nadal, then went on to win the US open, defeating his childhood friend Kevin Anderson in straight sets. This meant that it was the fourth time, that all the slams of the season, went to two players- Federer, and Nadal.

David Goffin and Grigor Dimitrov’s impressive season

David Goffin became the first Belgian player to break into the top ten singles rankings, after he reached the finals of the Rotterdam open. He also became the first Belgian player to qualify for the year-end ATP world tour finals, having had played as a replacement for the Frenchman, Gael Monfils, in 2016. Grigor Dimitrov also had a satisfying year, as he became the first Bulgarian male player to qualify for the year-end ATP world tour finals tournament. He also won his first masters’ 1000 title in Cincinnati. Just another statistic to add to the number of tennis records broken this year.

WTA calendar records

There were also a number of women’s tennis records broken in 2017. Serena Williams became the first player to have a tally of 316 wins at the majors, as she captured a record 23 title at the Australian open. Jelena Ostapenko, became the first unseeded player to win a major since 1993. She also set the record for the first Latvian player to capture a title at a grand slam, as she won her maiden title at the Roland Garros. Garbine Muguruza captured her second major title at the Wimbledon, setting a record for defeating both Williams’ sisters at majors’ finals. Sloane Stephens, won her first major title at the flushing meadows, and became only the second unseeded woman to win the US open, since Kim Clijsters. Simona Halep became only the seventh player to capture the year-end world number one spot, without ever winning a grand slam.

So here we are, at the end of the 2017 season, with multiple tennis records broken and others yet to be broken. The 2018 season kicks off in 3 weeks’ time, with the return of big names (Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Victoria Azarenka and Kei Nishikori) to competitive tennis. It promises to be an exciting year of tennis, as the players gear up for the heat down under in January, and we have our fingers crossed for yet another year full of surprises and upsets.
