After a disappointing exit in the third round of the 2020 Australian Open, Serena Williams admitted that it was her own undoing.

“I just made far too many errors to be a professional athlete today,” she said after the match.

The opening set saw Williams register 18 unforced errors to her opponent, Wang Qiang’s five. 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 loss means that Serena will have to wait at least for the next Grand Slam event to equal Margaret’s court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles. Williams last won a Grand Slam in 2017 at the Australian Open while being pregnant. She has, since then, played four Grand Slams before the ongoing Australian Open.

“I definitely do believe or I wouldn’t be on tour,” Williams said when asked if she thinks she can still reach Australian Margaret Court’s 24 Slams record.

“I don’t play just to have fun. To lose is really not fun.”

Williams believed her best chance to clinch her 24th Grand Slam lay in the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open.

“I am just a better actress, as I always say now,” she said. “I’m no happier than I was 10 years ago, but I just have to pretend like I don’t want to punch the wall, but in reality, I do.”

She vowed to get work harder and get back to practice the next day to avoid such losses in future.
