“That’s the Olympic Spirit” – Naomi Osaka Pens Her Thoughts on Postponement

The Tokyo Olympics was moved from its original schedule in 2020 to 2021 by the Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee. Naomi Osaka, a Japanese by birth, and now citizenship, was disappointed to not be able to in the Games. However, she knows the reason behind the move is solid.

Naomi Osaka was eager to land in Japan and play in her very first Olympic Games. She has been eager for a while now; last year she even forewent her American citizenship in order to represent Japan at the Games.

Sadly, the COVID-19 situation has only gotten worse as the year has progressed. Initially, the IOC and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were adamant about keeping the Games on schedule, they soon had to admit defeat and move it.

This was absolutely necessary, not just to keep the players and public safe, but also to ensure a fair Olympic Games.

Naomi Osaka has some inspiring words for us

Naomi Osaka released a statement today regarding the whole episode. In it, she revealed that she had mulled things over and was finally able to convey her thoughts.

She once again expressed her disappointment that the Games could no go ahead as planned but vowed to be even better prepared for the Games in 2021.

“I support Prime Minister Abe’s brave decision and the IOC 100%. The sport will eventually unite us again and be there for us always, but that time is not now. This is the time for people from all countries, backgrounds, and races to rally together to save as many lives as we can. To me, that is the Olympic spirit.”

She went on to address the citizens of Japan, urging them to stay strong and hang on in the face of adversity.

Naomi Osaka initially reacted poorly to the news of the postponement. She was not happy with the decision at all.

At 22 years of age, she is still very young and it is understandable that she reacted in that manner. What is admirable is her maturity in retracting on that and giving it more thought. The words she wrote today are simply beautiful and encouraging.

She may be young, but she is maturing, quite quickly, into a wise person.
