The match had it’s share of swings in momentum but, ultimately, it was Djokovic who took home the trophy. There was one particular moment when Djokovic looked down and out. He seemed to have exhausted his energy, until he took  “magic potions” to get back on track.

Novak Djokovic makes a djoke

The post-match press conference was an interesting event after Sunday’s final. The Australian Open concluded with this match and the media were eager to get as much out of both players as they could.

One journalist highlighted a very interesting statistical fact about Nole. As you may know, at one point in the match, he was trailing Thiem 2 sets to 1.

As it happens, Djokovic had never won a Grand Slam final after going 2-1 down in sets. The journalist asked if this was something that was trudging around in his mind.

“Well, I did not see the stats. I did not know that I never came from 2-1 deficit in sets in a Grand Slam final. So I wasn’t really thinking about it.”

Nole fans will be relieved that their man did not know about this particular stat. Though to be honest, it probably would have made no difference, given the man’s astonishing mental strength.

The same journalist’s line of questioning yielded a cheeky answer from the Serbian champion.

When asked about the drink that Djokovic’s team mixed for him and how it helped him, he had this to say.

“The liquids were magic potions that my physio prepares in his lab. That’s all I can say.”

All the while Novak was smiling slyly.

Dominic Thiem will probably wish he had the recipe for these magic potions. The runner-up fell just short of lifting his maiden Grand Slam. This marks the third Grand Slam final he has played and lost.

Jokes aside, though, kudos to Novak’s team. Whatever the drinks were, they certainly helped, especially because he was running dangerously low on energy at the time.
