Tottenham Hotspurs are currently 5th in the Premier League table behind City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal. The club was founded in 1882 and has won the Premier League twice. Spurs have also boasted of players like Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Harry Kane and others. They have even had legends like Jimmy Greaves in the club.
But, for a club that has been around for 136 years, who are the greatest Spurs players of all time?
Despite Hugo Lloris putting on decent performances, Pat Jennings is still regarded as Tottenham’s best ever shotstopper.
Not only is Jennings a highly revered figured by the Lilywhites, he is also much admired by the British people in general due to his outstanding abilities as a goalkeeper.
The now-retired Jennings played a record 119 times for Northern Ireland – an achievement that still stands unbroken – and is still among the only two goalkeepers to win the PFA Player of the Year, which he won in 1976.
Currently playing for AFC Bournemouth, Defoe has been an incredible player for Spurs. In the 2009-10 season, the Englishman scored 18 goals for the team. Also, in 2011-12 and 202-13 he found the back fo the net 11 times in both seasons.
Without a doubt, Defoe has been a valuable asset to the team and his absence was sorely missed. But now, the player is 36-years old and probably not as spritely as he used to be. Regardless of that, he is still one of the best Spurs players.
Lineker is a legend in his own right. He holds England’s record for goals in FIFA World Cup finals, with 10 scored. Lineker’s media career began with the BBC, where he has presented the flagship programme Match of the Day since the late 1990s. He has also worked for Al Jazeera Sports, Eredivisie Live and NBC Sports Network.
Lineker joined Spurs in July 1989 for a fee of £1.1million. In 3 seasons and 105 games, he scored 67 goals and even helped the team clinch the FA Cup.
Jimmy Greaves is England’s fourth highest international goalscorer, Tottenham Hotspur’s highest ever goalscorer, the highest goalscorer in the history of English top-flight football, and has also scored more hat-tricks for England than anyone else.
He finished as the First Division’s top scorer in six seasons. He is a member of the English Football Hall of Fame. Greaves began his professional career at Chelsea in 1957, and played in the following year’s FA Youth Cup final.
Harry Kane made his senior debut for Tottenham on 25 August 2011 in a UEFA Europa League game against Heart of Midlothian. Before establishing himself in Tottenham’s first team, Kane spent time on loan in League One playing for Leyton Orient, the Championship playing for Millwall and Leicester City and in the Premier League for Norwich City.
He became a regular starter and goalscorer for Tottenham in the 2014–15 season, winning the Premier League Player of the Month award twice, for January and February 2015. As of now, he is one of Tottenham Hotspurs’ best players and a valuable asset to the team.
