UFC 242: Daniel Cormier Makes Huge Claim About Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated the former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier last night to successfully defend his title for the second time. With that victory, he just took a big leap in the pound for pound greatest discussion in many eyes. It’s difficult to bring up a name in the sports of MMA who has been as dominating as Khabib Nurmagomedov. 

Even if there are a few mixed martial artists such as Jon Jones, Dimitrios Johnson and George St Pierre who have dominated their generation of fighters, they have all lost a round or fight at some point. However, Nurmagomedov has only lost a single round in his entire career against Conor McGregor and even that decision was highly debatable. So there is a very strong argument for Khabib Nurmagomedov being the greatest fighter in history.

Well, Daniel Cormier has just solidified that argument with his recent congratulatory message to Nurmagomedov after the victory in UFC 242. Cormier said:

“Champion, you are simply the best! #1p4p”

Even the lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov himself claimed after the win in UFC 242 that he is the pound for pound best and he wants to see himself on the top of that list in the coming weeks.

Cormier who is also considered as one of the best fighters to ever compete inside the octagon shares the same gym( American Kickboxing Academy) with the lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. A lot of credits can be given to the AKA team in the making of the unbeaten phenom that is Nurmagomedov.

After UFC 242, the arguments for Khabib being the best fighter is getting stronger and stronger. However, he might lose it all in his next fight against the former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson. If there is anyone skilled enough both on the ground and feet to defeat Nurmagomedov then it has to be Ferguson. Well, some potential fighters can give tough challenges to Khabib such as Justin Gathje, but Ferguson is a fan favorite and the fight that the fans want the most at the moment is Ferguson vs Nurmagomedov.

At the moment, it has not been official whether this fight is going to happen. However, both Dana White and  Nurmagomedov have said that Tony Ferguson is next in the line for the title shot.

It is uncertain who would win a fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, at the moment. However it’s safe to say that Khabib Nurmagomedov is the best lightweight in the history of UFC.
