Conor McGregor makes his much anticipated UFC return in the main event of UFC 246 against Donald Cerrone. Since the loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov back in UFC 229, Conor McGregor has been away from the sport. The last time Conor got his hands raised was back in 2016 when he beat Eddie Alvarez to become the lightweight champion. However, UFC moved Conor by one place in the recent pound for pound ranking ahead of Conor’s octagon return.

Conor McGregor moves to 13 in the latest pound for pound greatest rankings. This ranking is supposed to represent the very best fighters in the game right now irrespective of the division. However, UFC makes subtle adjustments in the rankings that are not appreciated by the fans and this might be one of those moments considering McGregor has not won a fight in the last three years.

This will be a crucial fight for Conor. As stated by UFC president, Dana White a win over Cerrone will allow Conor to fight for the lightweight title in the future. White claimed:
“Look what Conor has done over the last however many years. And he loses to Khabib. In a fight, when you talk about bad blood it’s the next level of bad blood. Gaethje was on his way up too. We have offered Gaethje a lot of fights that Gaethje has not taken either So Conor is in line next if he beats Cowboy.”

On the other hand, Conor might lose all the dominance he has in the lightweight division if he loses to Donald Cerrone who is coming off two losses Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje.
