The common narrative of the fight between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone has been that Conor dictates the fight on the feet and Cowboy dominates on the ground.
Conor McGregor is one of the best fighters in the early rounds. He is one of the finest strikers in the game and he is likely to dominate Cowboy who is a slow starter. But if Cowboy takes Conor down early and controls the fight on the ground, then he will eventually get a submission. This has been the common notion among the fans on how the fight may go between Conor and Cowboy. However, Donald Cerrone does not feel that the fight is going to play out as predicted.
In a recent interview with BT Sport, when asked about whether he will rely on his wrestling to win the fight against Conor who has been outworked on the ground before, Cowboy said:
“If you are Conor and you think Cowboy is going to take you down, would not you work on your wrestling? So the world thinks that I can go in there, I don’t have the accolades that could be them there’s like some Olympic level wrestler and is not going to snatch a single and drop Conor.”
Cowboy is a more decorated grappler than Conor McGregor. However, Conor’s takedown defense is underrated. After years of a long layoff, Conor did a commendable job against arguably the best grappler if UFC history, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Hence taking down Conor especially in the early rounds won’t be a walk in the park and Cowboy does realize that.
“I can’t just walk in and miss all his punches and shoot an f***g takedown. It does not work like that,” added Cowboy.
Cowboy is not too much bothered about taking Conor down and submitting him. That’s not who Cowboy is. He is getting into a fistfight with Conor on January 18th.
“But I don’t think I will. I like to fight, too. I like to get in there and throw down. Everyone says his stand-up is amazing, so why not go and test it? Everyone says, ‘You wanna just stand there and get knocked out?’ But it’s my decision. It’s my stupidity.
This is the mindset Cowboy has, going into probably the biggest fight of his MMA career. Now it’s safe to conclude that there is going to be fireworks on January 18th when Conor and Cowboy squares off inside the octagon.
