So Conor mania is officially back with the recent interview of Conor McGregor. Conor explained why the Cerrone fight makes sense for his UFC return, he claimed that he is focused than ever before, and he shared his plans for 2020 after the fight with Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. And in the process, he gave hints about some mega fights.
It was believed that Conor McGregor will be aiming for the BMF title fight against Jorge Masvidal after UFC 246. However, Conor seemed more intrigued by the welterweight title fight than the fight against Masvidal. He mentioned that he liked the fight between Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington at UFC 245. And he mentioned one fight at welterweight that makes a lot of sense after UFC 246.
“I like that welterweight belt. I like that welterweight title fight that was on the weekend, I like the look of that. I like the look of Kamaru Usman. I like the look of Colby. I am open to it all at 170.” stated Conor.

Here is why Conor McGregor vs Colby Covington Makes Sense
Though Colby Covington is coming off a loss against Kamaru Usman he is still a top contender in the division. He was winning on one judges’ scorecard going into the final round. And he was able to do that against Kamaru Usman with a broken jaw. Hence Colby is still a formidable opponent in the welterweight division.
On the other hand, Conor McGregor is taking on Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. If Conor decides to go for the lightweight title then Justin Gaethje makes the most sense for his next fight. And the winner of that fight can challenge the lightweight champion. However, if Conor goes for the third belt, the UFC welterweight title, a fight against the former number one contender who came very close to beating the champion will definitely be appealing to Conor.

It also has to be taken into consideration that Colby Covington is not one of the biggest welterweights in the division when it comes to the size which will favor Conor McGregor who is ideally a lightweight. Hence compared to someone like Usman or Woodley, Colby will be a comparatively easier fight for Conor on paper. That apart, financially this can be a big fight. It will be absolute chaos when Covington and Conor trade verbal jabs during the press conferences. And a win over Covington will grant Conor a shot at the welterweight title.

Though the fight with Covington is a long shot looking at the current scenario, it does seem one intriguing potential match up. However, it has to be noted that Conor has to deal with Cowboy first at UFC 246. While a win over Cowboy opens up multiple huge fights for Conor a loss will raise a question surrounding his MMA career.
