“I can’t get him the f**k off me, man.” This is what Dustin Poirier said to his corner in between rounds when he fought Khabib Nurmagomedov. And if you have followed Poirier’s career for long enough it’s needless to say that he is one of the toughest fighters in the game. But even the Diamond had to crumble when the Eagle put his pressure on him.

This has been the case with every single opponent or Khabib Nurmagomedov for the last few years. The experience of Rafel Dos Anjos, the lethal kicks of Edson Barboza, the toughness of Al Iaquinta, the elite striking of Conor McGregor, everything has looked ineffective against the relentless pressure and chain wrestling of the Russian. So the question is, is there anyone left in the lightweight division who can take the fight to the champion and take him to the deep water.

Well, that’s where the Boogeyman of the division, Tony Ferguson comes into the picture. The former interim champion, Tony Ferguson has brutalized every single opponent on his path to reach the number one contender spot. And now that this long-anticipated fight is a few weeks away from us fans can’t help but speculate who is going to come out victorious out of UFC 249.

Ferguson’s unbelievable cardio, striking, and unpredictable approach inside the octagon make him an opponent who has the most chances to dethrone the lightweight king. Many fans believe that Tony might win the fight via knockout or a submission on the ground. However, Khabib’s last opponent, Dustin Poirier does not agree with that notion.

Poirier believes that Khabib will be able to outwrestle Ferguson at UFC 249. Poirier predicted:

“I think Khabib beats Ferguson. It’s MMA. Anything can happen. Nothing’s for sure. But I just think he’s going to be the better competitor. If Kevin Lee was able to outwrestle Tony, and I think Danny Castillo did the same thing, Khabib’s definitely going to be able to do it.”

It’s hard to disagree with Poirier. Khabib will likely take down Ferguson and force his will upon him on the ground. But there is a narrative that Ferguson might be the only guy who can defend himself on the ground against arguably the greatest grappler in MMA. Ferguson’s grappling coach, Eddie Bravo has claimed that of the fight goes to ground then Ferguson will be looking to submit Khabib.

And that might be the difference between Ferguson and any other past opponent of Khabib Nurmagomedov. While others tried to get to their feet when taken down by Khabib, Ferguson will stay on the ground and try to out grapple Khabib. But can Ferguson defend himself on the ground against Khabib? Can he hurt Khabib with his striking? The fans will have to wait till UFC 249 to find out.
