“It’s Kind of Unfair to Blame Her” – Brittney Griner, Sentenced to 9 Years in Jail With 1 Million in Fines, Gets Support From UFC Fighter

Brittney Griner getting into trouble with the Russian authorities was a shock for the sports industry. Many well-known people spoke in her support. On the opposite side, many also felt the WNBA player should have known the rules of the country she was traveling to. As per several reports, Griner has been convicted for carrying banned substances to Russia.

UFC fighter Sijara Eubanks recently spoke to ‘The AllStar’ and discussed her upcoming fight against Maryna Moroz. However, close to the end of their conversation, the host and the fighter discussed Griner; an issue that has caused a lot of turmoil amongst people.

Eubanks empathized with the player and said, “… I do believe that she probably was relaxing. It’s, you know, you go there every year, it’s part of the thing. I go to Vegas every year like you’re back, you know. You pack your bag for your gym every day.”

“It’s sort of, she’s off to work that morning, you know. Just imagine being off to work every morning like, you’re doing the same thing you have done day after day. And then you get scooped up and you never get home.”

The host and Eubanks initially discussed how Griner had traveled with those cartridges before, too. The fighter thus further spoke about the political situation in Russia. She said Griner got into trouble before the Russia-Ukraine situation.

Hence, she said, “There wasn’t a lot of hoopla on the news about what was going on. So I think it’s kind of unfair to blame her for that, too.”

Sijara Eubanks thought it was a sad situation. Similarly, other UFC personalities including Joe Rogan, had a similar reaction. However, the retired UFC fighter Tim Kennedy might not agree.

The ex-UFC athlete took to Instagram and posted Griner’s picture. In the caption, he addressed his unhappiness with the Houston-born player for once requesting the Nation Anthem not be played during her games. As a result, he questioned her action of asking the American government to intervene in her current situation.

Hence, like fans, personalities connected to UFC also seem to have various thoughts about Brittney Griner’s conviction.

She has been sentenced to nine years in prison and up to 1 million rubles in fine.
