Are Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier Friends Now After Ugly Feud?

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier are two of the biggest names in the UFC. Both these elite strikers have had career trajectories that are quite similar in some respects. For instance, both of them started their careers in the UFC featherweight division. Later, both men moved to lightweight.

The two have fought three times in the octagon so far, with Dustin Poirier having two victories over McGregor’s one. Despite that, their rivalry doesn’t seem to be over with ‘The Notorious’ wanting a rematch after the controversial end to their last bout.

Even with his leg broken, McGregor taunted his opponent in Las Vegas in July.

In the lead-up to the rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier at UFC 257, both fighters were very polite to each other. At the press conferences, they complemented each other, and it felt very unlike a McGregor presser. The epitome of niceness was when Dustin Poirier gave McGregor a bottle of his hot sauce at the face-offs before the fight. After the fight, too, the two were very respectful.

The bad blood started a few months later when Poirier took to Twitter and claimed that Conor hadn’t made good on his promise to donate $500,000 to The Good Fight Foundation. McGregor had made this promise before the second fight and had tweeted and talked about it throughout fight week.

McGregor didn’t take nicely to this tweet from Poirier, claiming that a donation is not a debt. He further said that Poirier had not sent plans for what his foundation planned to do with the money. Later, McGregor donated the same amount to another charity in the same city in Louisiana.

UFC 264 saw a completely different version of McGregor and Poirier

UFC pounced on this and used it to build the trilogy fight. Both men took shots at each other in the build-up to the card. The press conference was where the new bad blood was on full display as they jawed at each other and exchanged insults. McGregor even threw Poirier’s sauce bottle off the stage.

Come fight day, everything was set up for all to be settled in the octagon. Both fighters looked ready. The beginning of the bout was competitive with each combatant implementing their strategy. Unfortunately, it all went catastrophically wrong when towards the end of round one, McGregor’s leg broke.

Poirier imitated McGregor‘s strut and had to be held back during the Irish fighter’s post-fight chat with Joe Rogan.

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier are most certainly not friends after the last fight. One would even venture to say that they are enemies. McGregor believes that the last bout settled nothing and that he deserves a fourth fight.

Meanwhile, Poirier has moved on as he feels he had the fight won till the snap.

‘The Diamond’ will fight for the lightweight belt at UFC 269. Given his issues with McGregor, one can expect some barbs from the Irishman on Twitter all throughout fight week, right up to December 11.
