After a three-year hiatus, Jon Jones finally has a date to return to action. Furthermore, fans can finally see ‘Bones’ make his heavyweight debut as he steps into the cage against Ciryl Gane in March at UFC 285. As an added bonus, Jones will be fighting for the vacant divisional title after the UFC announced they had parted ways with former champion Francis Ngannou. However, as the old adage goes, heavy is the head that wears the crown. While a title fight may be the best-case scenario for a debuting Jones, it does not come without its consequences. And who better to speak of those than someone who has worn the very same crown before?

Former two-division champion and Jones’ biggest rival, Daniel Cormier has come forward with his take on the recent developments. The fighter-turned-commentator said that Ngannou vs. Jones was the biggest fight for the division and therefore hated Ngannou’s exit from the UFC. However, the former Olympic freestyle wrestler also shared his excitement with Jones’ heavyweight debut against Gane.

The 43-year-old has held the titles in both 205 lbs and 265 lbs divisions and is well-equipped to speak about being a champion. As such, Cormier had a valuable piece of advice for his long-time rival ahead of his heavyweight debut.

He continued, “Fans always come up with these ideas but trust me, Jones. It’s gonna flip to ‘is he the real champion because he didn’t beat Francis Ngannou’ if you win that fight against Ciryl Gane. Which, by the way, is not guaranteed because Ciryl Gane is as good as they come.”
