But after point deductions for Yan due to repeated fouls (headbutts) just a few seconds before the last bell, the final scores were 47-46 from two judges and 47-48 in Magomedov’s favor, giving him the split decision.
Yan’s second defeat in the UFC was a very controversial one. At UFC 259, Petr Yan faced up against current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. Yan and Sterling both exhibited impressive fighting abilities during the bout, although Yan appeared to be more focused and accurate with his attacks than Sterling.
The Russian appeared to have the upper hand in the later rounds. In the 4th minute of the fourth round, Yan landed a knee kick to the head of Sterling while keeping his other leg on the ground. This resulted in his disqualification from the match, as Sterling could not continue fighting.

Many fans believe Aljamain Sterling pretended to be unable to fight after the kick landed, in order to win the bout and the UFC bantamweight title. Their rematch was scheduled for UFC 267. However, Sterling cannot compete because of recent neck surgery. Instead, Petr Yan will face Cory Sandhagen for a crack at the bantamweight championship title at UFC 267.
