Almost a month after his fight against Alexander Volkanovski, Islam Makhachev has opened up about the hurdles he had to overcome on enemy soil. Makhachev and Volkanovski had one of the most competitive title fights in UFC history on February 12. After a 5-round slugfest, the judges gave Islam Makhachev the nod. However, the Russian did not get his promised pound-for-pound top spot. Later, allegations of IV use for rehydration also came up. Now, Makhachev has opened up about what went wrong for him during the hectic hours in the lead-up to the fight in Australia.
According to Makhachev, he lost nearly 11 hours of rehydration because of the schedule the Australian commission set. The 31-year-old opened up about the changes to the schedule to veteran MMA referee John McCarthy and ex-UFC star Josh Thomson. The pair sat down to have a chat with the UFC lightweight champion in the latest installment of their show, ‘Weighing In.’

Makhachev responded, “I told you. What I did always, when I have time, weigh in, drinking a lot, I eat lunch, I eat dinner. Sleep, wake up like early morning 9-10. I did some little bit training, eat breakfast, again I go sleep, wake up, lunch and maybe I go to sleep again sometimes and I think after when I wake up, it’s like some small snack and go to the arena.”
However, the Dagestani did not get to follow his eat, sleep, and train routine in Perth. What’s worse, the champion ended up missing some of his meals as well. He said, “This time after the weigh-in, I have just lunch and I think I don’t have tomorrow morning time for the training and I have to do some training tonight.”

Makhachev continued, “I didn’t eat before training. I just go to the training, [drank] water and after training like 9-10 pm I think we have to sleep now. If I eat something now, it’s gonna be no hard and I go to sleep, I eat nothing. I go to sleep, wake up, put the alarm [for] 8 am, wake up, eat just three eggs, and go to the arena. I don’t have like lunch, dinner.”
Furthermore, Makhachev pointed out how the New Zealand commission held the weigh-ins on Friday night for a UFC event in the country set for US time on Sunday. However, the Australian commission made no such concessions.
