Kamaru Usman vs Georges St-Pierre: Who Has Fought Tougher Opponents in their UFC Runs?

UFC welterweight, Kamaru Usman, came out on top at UFC 258 and defended his strap for the third time. He’s now 4-0 in UFC title fights and is on the path towards sheer dominance across the sport of MMA. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ stopped Gilbert Burns in the third round following a well-timed stance-switched jab that stunned him.

Following the victory, Usman entered lofty territory by surpassing Georges St-Pierre’s unbeaten streak at welterweight. He’s on a 13-fight win streak alongside names such as Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva is the only athlete to have 16 consecutive wins under his belt and is the current record holder.

Usman’s recent win has brought the GOAT debate under the microscope from fans and critics. Chiefly, only Georges St-Pierre can come in as a worthy contender for welterweight GOAT status and it’s easy to see why. Let’s take a look at their strength of schedules to determine who comes out on top.

UFC head-to-head: Kamaru Usman vs Georges St-Pierre

The Nigerian Nightmare’ is undoubtedly one of the most dominant forces to step foot in the cage. He’s never been knocked down or taken down and has out-landed every one of his UFC opponents thus far.

Usman’s resume includes the who’s-who at welterweight, including former champions like Colby Covington (interim) and Rafael dos Anjos. Additionally, he’s scalped wins over Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards to clean out the top of the division.

Usman’s currently holds wins over the top four highest-ranked welterweights in his world and has begun cleaning the division. Chiefly, the next name who he hasn’t faced and beaten is the number 5 ranked fighter in Stephen Thompson. The only thing going against him is that he’ll have to accrue another seven title defenses to truly eclipse St-Pierre’s record.

Georges St-Pierre: Sustained greatness

‘GSP’ has only suffered two losses in his career, and he’s successfully avenged both his professional losses. As mentioned earlier, he accrued 9 title defenses and was also successful in cleaning out his entire division. Furthermore, ‘GSP’ also captured the middleweight title and joined the short-list of UFC champ-champs’. Some of his career highlights include victories over a prime Josh Koscheck, Carlos Condit, and Jon Fitch.

Despite the fact that he began grinding out decisions more than statement finishes, his dominance over his generation of welterweights is virtually unmatched. Usman still has a way to go in that regard.

Traditionally, GOAT status in a particular weight class comes in by performances in title fights as the main benchmark. Title fight victories and belts tend to stand the test of time and come in as a testament to longevity. In this regard, Usman has a long way to go, however, at 33 years of age, he’s on the path to surpass St-Pierre.
