Sonnen poses the idea that the rule of stopping a fight should have more clarity. In addition, the decision should not be based solely on a fighter’s ability to take more damage. Instead, he suggested that a fight should see an end when a fighter can no longer win. He believes that the responsibility of stopping a fight falls on those closest to the fighter, such as their cornermen, who have a better understanding of their fighter’s abilities and limitations.

Sonnen said, “You stop the fight when that guy can no longer win. Whenever that is and as soon as that is, that’s when a responsible person stop the fight.”

Sonnen also acknowledged that the fighter, corner-men, and referee may have different perspectives on when a fight should be stopped. He suggested that while the referee’s role is to ensure the safety of the fighters, the corner men’s role is to understand their fighter’s abilities and limitations and make the call to stop the fight if necessary. The veteran fighter’s corner also had middleweight champion, Alex Pereira.
