Video: When Jon Jones Suffered the Only Loss of His Career Against Matt Hamill

Jon Jones is a legend whose name can be found in every MMA fan’s top fighters list. The 34-year-old is a juggernaut in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division who has beaten every opponent he has ever faced, well, almost.

If one looks closely, they’ll see that there’s also a loss recorded in the legend’s tally. With a record of 26 wins and 1 loss, what is the story behind that outlier in Bones’ record? With a fair share of controversy associated with it, it has become one of the biggest highlights of Jones’ career.

On 5th December 2009, Jon Jones entered the Octagon to lock horns with Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale. “Bones” dominated the fight from the start and tackled Matt Hamill down, only to pour more blows on him.

Jones used 12-6 elbows, a prohibited downward elbow striking technique, on ‘The Hammer’ to knock him out. Referee Steve Mazzagatti took notice of the move and immediately penalized ‘Bones’ for a point in the round.

But Hamill, with a dislocated shoulder and lacerated nose, could not continue the fight. Because of this, the Referee replayed the round and observed that Jones continued to attack Hamill’s already bloodied nose.

This resulted in Jones being disqualified from the match, putting a blemish on his undefeated status. Many believe that it should have been ruled as NC (No Contest), one of them is the President of UFC Dana White. White wants the decision to be overturned and has also contacted several MMA authorities for it as well.

Where is Jones now?

After the controversy, Jones (26-1) didn’t look back and became the UFC’s Light Heavyweight champion twice. With a record 10 title defenses registered to his name.

However, last year, “Bones” left the light-heavyweight throne vacant and moved out of the 205-pounds division in pursuit of other aspirations. Goals that involve the Heavyweight gold.

He recently announced that he will switch to the heavyweight division of the UFC to compete for the Heavyweight championship.
