Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal quickly rose to the top after defeating Ben Askren in UFC 239. He knocked Askren out in merely 5 seconds, thereby making it the fastest KO in the history of UFC. However, the recent incident in FIFA made Gamebred recall his bout with Askren.

During Argentina’s match with Saudi Arabia, in FIFA 2022, Yasser Al Shahrani suffered a terrifying injury. Immediately after, he was taken back on a stretcher and given the necessary treatments. Later, he was shifted to Germany for further treatment.

Jorge Masvidal was reminded of his past from the recent FIFA incident

In the recent FIFA match with Argentina playing against Saudi Arabia, a horrific incident baffled the fans. Saudi Arabia’s defender, Yasser Al Shahrani, suffered an injury as his face made contact with the goalkeeper, Mohammed Alowais’s knee. The defender suffered a fractured jaw, several broken facial bones, and significant internal bleeding. Although the team won against Argentina, the incident painted it with worry.

However, UFC fans connected the incident with Jorge Masvidal’s brutal knee that collided with Ben Askren. In their welterweight bout in UFC 239, Gamebred won the match with a TKO as his knee knocked Askren out cold. Masvidal wasn’t too far behind to make the connection himself. He put on an Instagram story and mockingly tagged his previous opponent. In the clip, Alowais collided with Al Shahrani, but the audio was that of the Masvidal versus Askren match.

Another one of Masvidal’s Instagram stories showed the collision between the goalkeeper and the defender. He had shared a fan’s story which read, “Ohhh @gamebredfighter turn into soccer lol.” The incident indeed reminded the MMA fans of one of the fastest KOs in UFC history.

Ben Askren took credit for Gamebred’s popularity

Askren previously shared his opinion about Masvidal’s fame. He claimed that the welterweight contender became a star at his expense. Keeping one of the fastest knockouts and Masvidal’s flying knee, Askren’s claims might not be entirely false.

He said, “People will take offense, but I made him a huge star, right? It was at my expense. I don’t think he was nobody before that, but he was kind of like a moderately popular fighter who kind of had maybe a hardcore following but wasn’t known to a broader audience. And then, the event with me happened, unfortunately, and he became one of the, let’s say, top 5 stars in the sport.”

Nonetheless, the welterweight fight between Askren and Masvidal has been etched in the golden pages of UFC history. Moreover, the uncanny similarities between the fight and the FIFA incident could not be overseen by the UFC fans.
