Light Heavyweight contender Dominick Reyes was up-till now calling out former champion Jon Jones for a rematch stating the latter left the division since he didn’t want to fight him. However, Reyes said that he has now let the rematch go and is focusing on his upcoming title bout. His opponent, top contender Jan Blachowicz, is coming off a spectacular knockout win over Corey Anderson. The fight will be for the vacant Light Heavyweight title on September 26.

Reyes is coming off a controversial decision loss against the former champion Jon “Bones” Jones at UFC 247. The former has been wanting a rematch ever since the fight ended. The judges scored the fight 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46 unanimously in favor of the champion. Many fans and critics, however, called the fight a “robbery” and believed Reyes should’ve won the title that night. Regardless of the result, Reyes showed his grit in the fight and proved to everyone that he was worthy of the title.

Moving on from the rematch

On asking whether he understood Jones’ decision, Reyes paid the former champion his due credit and said, “I get it. He (Jon) wants to be as successful as he can, and you know, he’s hedging his bet here.

“Most probability to be the greatest of all time, he’s the greatest light heavyweight of all time, but he wants to be the greatest fighter of all time. In order to do that, he needs to move up, and he needs to do all this crazy other stuff apparently. But fifteen title defenses is enough you know. I understand where he’s coming from. I really do.”

When asked about his next fight Reyes said, “It’s an opportunity to become champion of the world, man. Any opportunity to become champion of the world is going to completely change your life. It’s gonna change everything. I’m right on the precipice of creating my own legacy, etching it in stone where nobody could ever take it away from me. I’m so close to that, and I’m not letting my foot off the pedal. I’m right there.”

This response came as a surprise to many since Reyes had been calling the former champion out on social media and all his interviews till now.

His latest interview, however, showed that he has come to terms with the current situation and with Jon’s decision to leave the division. Reyes also stated that it doesn’t matter whom he beats to win the championship as long as the belt is wrapped around his waist.
