“I Was Out on a Boat Drinking Beers” – Boxer Clay Collard Opens up on Max Holloway Match

Former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway had an unfortunate run in his last four professional fights. The Hawaiian has lost his featherweight crown, notching only one win in those four fights against three different opponents. Yet, Holloway has received several appraisals from fellow UFC fighters and fans for his latest performance against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 251, which many consider being ‘unfair’.

Before ending up in the recent losing tide, Holloway was relishing on a thirteen fight win streak. Alongside, he also had the 145 lbs UFC gold on his shoulder. ‘Blessed’ reflected sheer dominance in all those victories and cemented his name amongst the greatest featherweights of the promotion.

However, Holloway’s former UFC rival turned professional boxer Clay Collard has disheartened several Holloway fans by claiming that the Hawaiian was not the toughest he has fought. Although Max Holloway stopped Clay Collard in their matchup in 2014, Collard overlooked Holloway’s strength in his recent statement.

Former UFC featherweight Clay Collard transitioned from MMA to boxing in 2017 and bagged an impressive victory against Jamey Swanson on debut. In his latest appearance against Lorawnt T Nelson, Collard bagged another win via knockout and boasts a pro boxing record of 8-2-3 (NC).

Collard, who has faced eminent fighters from both the MMA and boxing universe, doesn’t consider Max Holloway as his toughest opponent. During his latest interview with the Athletic, Collard revealed why exactly he lost the fight against Max Holloway in 2014.

Collard stated that fighting against Max was not tough. He further justified the defeat by pointing out his habits.

“No, he (Max Holloway) wasn’t my toughest. I wasn’t ready for the fight. I was out on a boat drinking beers- Corona, Pacifico, mixing in a Heineken and this really good one out of Utah called Burnt Mountain,” Clay Collard told the Athletic.

Holloway hasn’t reacted to the statement yet. The Hawaiian snatched Clay Collard as his third victim in the 13-fight win streak journey. He then grabbed the interim featherweight title six fights later, against Anthony Pettis in the headliner of UFC 206.

Meanwhile, Clay Collard has just four bouts in the UFC and has won one of them via a unanimous decision. He departed his path from MMA with a pro record of 14-7 and has turned to a professional boxer at this stage.
