Originally, McGregor had planned to fight three times in 2020. Yet it seems like he has given up on the sport after one match. No doubt that the Coronavirus pandemic had its impact, but keep in mind that McGregor refused to fight Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 and asserted that he is not a “replacement fighter.”

Following UFC 250, he dropped a bombshell on the MMA community when he announced his retirement. Though many fans and pundits don’t buy it, McGregor claimed that he has lost interest in the game. It is worth noting that McGregor has played the retirement card twice in the past.

Should Conor McGregor come back?

As mentioned before, McGregor is a huge draw in the UFC. However, the current situation does not allow an audience inside the arena. It simply translates to a loss of revenue for the UFC.

At the moment, the company is unwilling to entertain any demands made by their fighters, even if it’s their biggest stars. Negotiating a good deal at this time has proven to be difficult for others as well.

Even if Conor is Dana White’s favorite fighter, the UFC boss has no issues with his retirement. Ultimately, McGregor might not get paid as much as he’d like to if he returns. Alternatively, he can sit out for a while. And If he still chooses to come back, there are some fantastic matchups awaiting him. Any of these opponents can help the Irishman make a ton of cash.

Possible matchups for Conor McGregor

Nate Diaz trilogy

Just a few weeks ago, these two were going at it on social media. McGregor vs Diaz 3 has the potential to be the highest selling PPV in UFC history. The duo has fought twice before. The first fight ended in favor of Nate Diaz. And McGregor claimed the victory in the rematch. As of now, the scoreboard is even and a third fight should help settle the score.

BMF title match

Yes, Jorge Masvidal said that he will not put the BMF title on the line unless the other person also agrees to risk something. Well, it is difficult to turn down a big-money fight like Conor.

Both men are so good at their craft. If Conor defeats Masvidal, he can stake his claim at the welterweight title shot. And stand a chance to become a three-division UFC champion.

Floyd Mayweather rematch

McGregor made over $100 million in his boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather. Despite losing, McGregor’s stock rose tremendously for going 10 rounds with one of the greatest defensive boxers of all time.

On multiple occasions, Conor has said that he can beat Floyd if a rematch ever happens. Even Floyd seems to want it. And why not? Both men stand to make a ton of money.

Tony Ferguson

At a point in time, Paradigm Sports managed both McGregor and Ferguson. But after Ferguson split from the company, his animosity with McGregor became evident. Ferguson is more vocal about his displeasure with McGregor. Similarly, McGregor also fired shots at Ferguson.

A victory over Ferguson will fast track Conor to a lightweight title bout and a potential rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov (If he is still the champion).

Vince McMahon

This will stun many fans. But WWE’s Executive Vice President, Triple H aka Paul Levesque is open to the idea of Conor McGregor crossing over to the WWE. “The Game” stated that he would like to see Conor vs Vince for the Billion Dollar strut.

Besides that, WWE is also known to pay a large amount of money to stars who get in the ring.
