At the Champions League Round of 16, Manchester United were facing off against Sevilla. Luis Muriel, Sevilla striker, said, “He is an extraordinary goalkeeper, one of the best”. Muriel could only watch in disbelief as de Gea stopped his point-blank header from rolling in, just before half-time. As a result of his brilliant performances, De Gea may have earned himself an extended stay at Old Trafford this summer. He’s a giant among keepers now, I think he’s the best around.” De Gea’s talent is such that he has been hailed as Edwin van der Sar’s successor. Inevitably, his size made him a physical target for the opposition and he was considered weak. He said, “English football is different, especially for a goalkeeper. It’s more aggressive, more physical. It’s far, far harder. The ball is in the air more and you get pushed about. And the referees don’t blow [for] anything!” De Gea’s patience was tested during the Louis van Gaal days when he struggled with the Dutchman’s approach. Real Madrid very nearly got their man and United would’ve lost a crucial cog. In the Champions League this season, he has a 95.5 per cent record of shots saved, more than any other keeper in the competition. Wednesday’s clean sheet against Sevilla was his sixth in his last eight games in Europe. It’s to learn that back in October, he was not even on FIFA’s list of best goalkeepers of 2017.

<strong>Brief History</strong>

Manchester United is regarded as one of the oldest football clubs in the Premier League. The team was formed in 1878, but under the name?Newton Heath LYR Football Club. It was only in 1902 that it was officially named Manchester United.

The Red Devils are arguably the most successful team in the Premier League. This was even back when the League was known as the Football League.

From 1945 onward, after the second World War, it was also the beginning of one of the greatest eras of Manchester United. In other words, it was the era of the 'Busby Babes'. However, in 1958, the rampant Busby Babes were halted in their tracks, by the Munich Air disaster, which claimed the lives of eight players. However, Matt Busby managed to rebuild the team once again.

Then, from 1986 to 2013, the next great Manchester United era began. Namely, the Sir Alex Ferguson era, where the Red Devils were dominant. Although they had a sluggish start, they came into their own in the 1990s.

Currently, after going through a few managers like David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. Finally, the team has settled with United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 30<sup>th</sup> season of the top flight professional English football, Premier League 2021/22 will take place from August 13 2021 to May 17 2022.
