US Open 2019 Day 1 Upsets – Angelique Kerber, Fabio Fognini and Many Others Pack Their Bags

The opening day of US Open 2019 had Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams in action. All of them earn their tickets to the next round at the New York major, but sadly a few seeds end their American Slam reverie on the day one of the US major.

Angelique Kerber

Her poor run on the WTA track continues since the time Angelique Kerber split with her coach. The former US Open champion is presently playing without a coach and at Flushing, the 14th seed, Kerber lost to Kristina Mladenovic 5-7, 6-0, 4-6.

Jack Sock

The American returned to the circuit after his injury hiatus at this year’s Atlantan Open, and at US Open 2019, Jack Sock lost to Pablo Cuevas in straight sets.

Berdych came back to the circuit after his injury layer over, he just won a match at Winston-Salem Open last week and he lost to Jenson Brooksby 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the US Open 2019.

Monica Puig

She was devastated after her opening-round loss as her coach (ex-coach now) parted ways with her before US Open 2019 got underway. “I wanted to prove to myself that nobody is going to be able to treat me this way in anything,” she said after her defeat in reference to her ex-coach Kamau Murray. Puig 3-6, 3-6 to Rebecca Peterson.

Fabio Fognini

The American, Reilly Opelka took out the 11th seed Fabio Fognini  6-3, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 in the opening round of the US Open 2019.

CoCo Vandeweghe

US Open 2017’s semifinalist, Vandeweghe stepped on to the WTA track at Silicon Valley Classic tournament this year in San Jose after she recovered from her ankle injury. However, at the US Open 2019, she was ousted by her compatriot, Sofia Kenin 6-7, 3-6.

Hubert Hurkacz

On Sunday, the Polish player, Hurkacz won his first-ever ATP title at Winston-Salem Open 2019 after defeating Benoit Paire in the finals, but the very next day, it turned out to be a nightmare for Hubert Hurkacz as he lost a toilsome five-set match to Jeremy Chardy in the opening round of the US Open 2019.

Maria Sharapova

Caroline Garcia

Ons Jabeur defeated Caroline Garcia 6-7, 2-6 in the first round of US Open 2019.

Taylor Fritz

Guido Pella

Philipp Kohlschreiber

Lukas Pouille defeated Kohlschreiber 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4 on the day one of US Open 2019.

It was his last US Open of this tennis career as recently, Tipsarevic announced his retirement from tennis. He lost to Denis Kudla in four sets.
