US Open 2019 – Stan Wawrinka Confirms He Was Sick Ahead of Quarterfinals

The three-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka advanced to the quarterfinals of US Open 2019 after dethroning the defending champion, Novak Djokovic. After his match against the Serb, reports suggested that, he was not feeling well in the locker room. Also, the next morning he canceled his Swiss Press meeting pertaining to his sickness.

World Number 24, Stan Wawrinka confirmed his sickness. He was down with flu and rested in the bed. The Swiss didn’t turn up for practice sessions for almost one and a half days after his win over Djokovic, but in the quarterfinal against Daniil Medvedev, Wawrinka was at his best.

After his defeat, Wawrinka was asked whether he regretted not being fully fit before his quarterfinal encounter since he lacked energy in the game. “Of course, I regret it,” Stan Wawrinka said. “It’s part of a Grand Slam tournament, you have to deal with it. I gave it all, whatever I had and I wish, I had more energy. From the beginning to the end, I missed everything, intensity, movement, and clear ideas.”

The NextGen player, Medvedev eliminated Wawrinka in four sets and progressed into first career Grand Slam semifinal. The fifth seed, Medvedev will be taking on the World Number 78, Grigor Dimitrov, who produced the biggest upset of the tournament by knocking down the five-time US Open champion, Roger Federer in five sets.

In the second set of semifinals, the 18-time Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal will battle against the Italian, Matteo Berrettini, who played a rollercoaster match against the Frenchman, Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals of US Open 2019.

Besides, Nadal, it is the first career US Open semifinals for other three semifinalists and both 23-year-olds, Medvedev and Berrettini will be showing up for their maiden Slam semifinals in New York, United States.
