Children develop most of their traits at an early age. As such, mothers play a significant role in their child’s success. Therefore, being the most decorated alpine skier does not make it any different for Lindsey Vonn.

If anything, her mother exerted additional support to imbue her beliefs and opinions to make Vonn the athlete people aspire even today.

Lindsey Vonn dedicates her induction into the Hall of Fame to her mother

The three-time Olympic medalist has retired from the sport after clinching bronze in the downhill event at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2019 in Åre, Sweden. Vonn stated her reason for retirement was due to various injuries she sustained during her successful career.

However, the news of her retirement did not dim people’s expectations of the skier. And the announcement did little to dampen her popularity. Her previous accolades at prominent meets ensured that.

It also made her the recipient of numerous awards and honors. This year, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) nominated Vonn for the highest degree of honor, the Hall of Fame, Class of 2022. The committee selected the finalists from the list of nominees based on votes.

When the committee announced the list of finalists at the beginning of the month, Vonn had made the cut. Her name appeared among other prominent athletes, including Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin, and Michelle Kwan. The committee held the induction ceremony on June 24. And during the ceremony, Vonn had a heartfelt message for her mother.

“Mainly I would like to dedicate this to my mother. She’s having her own battle right now with ALS,” Vonn said. The four-time Olympian could not hold back her tears as she spoke these words. But she continued with her speech.

The Olympian added, “And she’s taught me so much about strength and character, and that’s because of the example that my mother set that I was able to overcome whatever obstacle was thrown at me. Thank you, Mom.”

What is the condition Vonn’s mother suffers from?

During her speech, Vonn opened up about her mother’s ALS diagnosis, a neurological disease affecting the nerve cells that control the voluntary movement of muscles. It can be severely distressing to witness a loved one battle with their condition, especially when the disease does not have a cure. However, the person can find strength knowing that their family and friends extend their full support.
