“Rather Be Running…”- Two Times Olympic Medalist Russian Figure Skater Evgenia Medvedeva Doesn’t Want Her Kids to Follow the Sport

The sport of figure skating is one of the hardest sports in the world. The balance, technical ability, and commitment make it one of the most vigorous sports in the world. Thus, this has prompted the 2018 Olympic medalist to not send her kids to the sport of figure skating. Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia is a two-time Olympic silver medalist as she talked about how she won’t make her kids figure skaters.

Medvedeva is a talented figure skater who won many medals for her country. But, she talked about sending her kids to other sports like running, swimming, or other sports.

Evgenia Medvedeva won’t send her kids to figure skating

Medvedeva was ranked number one during the 2016-17 season and won the World Championships in 2016 and 2017. The commitment needed to be a figure skater is not straightforward. A skater needs pinpoint precision, brilliant execution, as well as, be visually perfect for the audience by perfecting moves. Medvedeva talked about getting healthy and urged kids to take up different sports.

“No. It will rather be running, swimming, something natural for a person. Sports are great! Go in for sports, children – you will be healthy!” mentioned Medvedeva.

There are two routines in figure skating. A short program and a long program. The first event lasts for two minutes and 50 seconds while the long program lasts for around four minutes. With the number of jumps, twists, and spins involved, skaters need to practice the sport every single day for long hours.

Why is it so hard?

The training will be a multi-year process. The body of figure skaters is lean as they would reduce the pressure on the knees while landing from the incredible number of jumps they do. By mimicking the time limit from the competition, the skaters practice high-intensity workouts to perfect their routines, from start to finish. Likewise, injuries are common for figure skaters. Most of them complain about stress fractures and tendonitis on the feet and legs. With all the injuries and other struggles, Medvedeva has decided not to put her kids through it.

Being a figure skater demands total commitment to the sport. While every sport is the same, being a top-class figure skater will need them to train at very high levels. Thus, Olympic medalist Medvedeva voiced her opinions about the sport.
