US Olympic Gold Medalist Nathan Chen Makes a Dicey Statement on His Figure Skating Future

Everyone goes through stages in life when they are uncertain about what to do next in life. Students are one of many examples who face the undecided aspect of their future. And being a decorated Olympian also does not leave the same out of the dilemma, not even Nathan Chen.

Apart from the gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Nathan has another achievement to add to his list of accomplishments. At the 2017 US Figure Skating Championships, Chen landed five quadruple jumps during a single performance. It makes him the first male figure skater to achieve this feat. Recently, he appeared in an interview to discuss his career, education, and mental health.

Nathan Chen uncertain about his career in figure skating

When pursuing academics, people come across situations when they are undecided regarding which career to pursue next. Some may have experienced it themselves, while others may know someone who may have faced similar circumstances.

And it seems like Chen, too, may be facing such a conundrum as the skater has not yet decided on his further career in figure skating.

The Olympian was asked if he would like to continue figure skating in a competitive environment during the interview.

Considering the question for a moment, Chen answered, “I’ve thought about it. But I haven’t come to a conclusion quite yet. One thing at a time.”

Additionally, when asked about his thoughts on med school, Chen replied, “Yeah — that’s in my sights. But as time progresses, I’ll see where I want to go.”

Activities Chen is presently engaged in

The Ivy League student is majoring in statistics and data science at Yale University. However, he took a leave of absence in 2020 to focus on his Olympic training.

Currently, he is touring with the Stars on Ice cast, including Alysa Liu, Jason Brown, Mariah Bell, Karen Chen, Mirai Nagasu, Alexa Knierim, Brandon Frazier, Madison Hubbell, Zachary Donohue, Madison Chock, Evan Bates, and Vincent Zhou.

Moreover, the ice dance team of Jean-Luc Baker and Kaitlin Hawayek that secured the US bronze medal will also make guest appearances at the Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle on May 28.

The two-time Olympian plans to return to the university campus to focus on academics in August after the show’s current season concludes.
