After final advice from his coach, Yuzuru Hanyu started his journey to become an Olympic gold medalist in 2010. The 15-year old phenomenon took the center stage at the Hague, Netherlands, showing fans a glimpse of what is coming. The 2010 World Junior Figure Skating Championships, saw Hanyu entering the limelight. He won the gold medal in the competition, showcasing his talents to fans in attendance.

Often regarded as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time, Hanyu failed to win an Olympic medal in Beijing. Having already won two Olympic gold medals, he couldn’t muster up a good performance in Beijing. However, his performances at the exhibition gala excited the audience. But, let’s go back to his breakthrough.

Gold medal performance of Yuzuru Hanyu in 2010

After competing well during the 2009-10 Japan Championships, he earned a place to compete at the Junior World Championships. At that moment of time, fans knew this kid was going to be special. Thus, on this day back in 2010, Hanyu provided a masterclass in figure skating and announced his arrival. Although he ranked third in the short program, his free skate routine fetched him the gold medal. Scoring 216.00 points in the round, he won the contest in the free skate program. Moreover, he landed seven triple jumps to win the competition.

Despite that performance in the free skate program, he did a good job in the short program as well. He scored 68.75 points to give him a chance of winning a gold medal. He took that chance, gleefully. The fluidic movements he showcased at the Beijing Winter Olympics were similar to the ones he did in 2010. The perfect balance, poise, and charisma he showcases on the skating rink are second to none. Hence, this is where Hanyu came into life.

Hanyu’s Successful career

After that, he won two Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018. Skating since he was four years old, he loved the competition more than anything else. During the post-skating press conference, Hanyu loved his performance and looked really happy.

“I am very happy to win this competition and I am satisfied with today’s performance, including the jumps, steps, and spins. I did my best. I am very happy to win, but I am even happier with the performance itself,” said Hanyu.

To sum up, the 2010 Junior World Championships was a preview of what he would become 12 years later. Yuzuru Hanyu is a living legend.
