“Hits My Soul”- Suni Lee Opens Up on Her Imposter Syndrome That Made Her Feel Non-Deserving

The toughest battle you may ever fight might be against your own conscience. The feeling of not feeling worthy can eat you up from inside even if you are an Olympic champion, like Suni Lee. Although the 19-year-old American is an outstanding gymnast, lately, she has been having a tough time thinking about her achievements at the Tokyo Olympics.

Suni Lee is currently a freshman at Auburn where she scored a perfect 10 on two occasions. However, after winning the gold medal at Tokyo Summer Olympics, her life was changed forever.

Suni Lee feels like an imposter

Maybe the 19-year-old Suni wasn’t prepared for the all attention she received after putting on a remarkable performance at the Olympics. For Suni, winning a gold at Tokyo Olympics after Simone Biles pulled out from the event didn’t feel natural. She said, “I feel like after the Olympics, there’s just been so much doubt in like, ‘Oh, she shouldn’t have won Olympics, blah, blah, blah,’ and it really hits my soul.”

The Olympic champion further added, “I think I just put in my head that I didn’t deserve to win.” 

“Like impostor syndrome. That’s exactly what I have. And it’s very hard. It was very hard for me to motivate myself the first couple of weeks here because it was like I didn’t want to do gymnastics. I hated it,” Suni said.

Suni Lee is a champion

History is proof that Suni is indeed one of the most incredible athletes the world has ever witnessed. After Simone Biles pulled out of the all-around event in Tokyo citing mental health concerns, Suni stepped up and brought him the gold. Only a gymnast of her caliber could have bagged such a feat at a time when the whole world had its eyes on her.
