“Best Gift I’d Ever Received”: $400 Million Worth Jackie Chan Once Felt ‘Unbelievably Happy’ After Receiving Petty Surprise From His Mother

Martial arts legend and renowned actor, Jackie Chan, has over years amassed a fortune of $400 million. However, he wasn’t born with many luxuries or a silver spoon in his mouth. His family wasn’t rich, often living on the edge of poverty. Despite the shortage of money, the maestro’s childhood was extremely eventful and includes several moments that could be more precious than money. In his autobiography published in 2015, Chan revealed an incident from his childhood when he received a little gift from his mother, which he rates as the best gift of his life.

The 68-year-old joined the China Drama Academy very early in his life, where he had a rough time. However, this incident is from the time when he lived at Victoria Peak. Let us have a look at the incident that eventually led to the gift from his mom.

Jackie Chan made good friends with his parent’s boss’ daughter, and the two jokingly called each other “boyfriend” and “girlfriend.” Moreover, the martial arts legend, a beginner then, took the onus of becoming the guardian of Sophie. In his autobiography, Never Grow Up, Chan revealed that one day a neighbor kid teased his ‘girlfriend,‘ and the Shanghai Noon star couldn’t take it. In an act of courage, he beat the kid. However, Chan’s father witnessed that fight and got angry, eventually tossing him into the embassy’s garbage shed, as punishment.

Although Chan was furious with his father’s behavior, his mood worsened due to hunger. After fighting hard with his empty stomach, he decided to doze off. However, almost like divine intervention, his mother reached for the door and knocked on it. Chan asked, “Who is it?” As his mother softly said, “Cannonball, look up.”

As Chan mentions in his book, “Through that gap at the top of the door, she pushed something through. A wrapped package landed on my lap. Before I could get the paper off, I smelled the delicious aroma of an enormous roast-meat sandwich. I thought, I love Mom!! It was the best gift I’d ever received in my entire life! I whispered a thank-you and she tiptoed away. I devoured my meal, feeling unbelievably happy.”

After an eventful childhood, Chan grew up to struggle as a stuntman first, and then become one of the richest actors in the world gradually. However, no matter how wealthy he has become, the love and affection of his mother in that sandwich remain the most precious gift for the legend.
