Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez Could Be Collecting Money From His MLB Contract Until He Is 50 – Here’s How

Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez is undoubtedly one of the most iconic players to play the sport. Even while enjoying a storied career with several key performances including several MVP wins, Rodriguez often made the news for his bumper contracts. And with good reason, too. Reportedly, his contract with the Texas Rangers could be paying out even as Rodriguez turns 50 and well after his retirement.
Alex Rodriguez, while a player in the league was known for his hitting ability and productivity at home plate. But it was in the year 2000 that he really set conversation across the league alight. Alex Rodriguez in his first free agency signed on with the Texas Rangers in a league-record contract. A contract that is reportedly paying out even now, several years after Rodriguez has retired from MLB.

Reportedly, at the time that A-Rod signed with the Texas Rangers; his contract had a clause that has ensured the payout today. Reportedly, at the time he was traded, he was to receive $36 million in deferred money from that record deal. Subsequently, that was converted to an assignment bonus, which has racked up two percent in interest every year.

In financial turmoil, the Rangers declared bankruptcy in 2010. However, at this point, they still owed Rodriguez about $26 million. It was during this time that A-Rod intervened with some legal help and had the capital put into an investment account.
It was this that led to the curious situation we find ourselves in. And this fateful change made Rodriguez more money on his deferred payment plan. This effectively means that by the time the famed hitter collects his last baseball-related paycheck in 2025, he’ll be 50 years old.

Alex Rodriguez signed on with the Texas Rangers in 2000; back when the Seattle Mariners could no longer fulfill his contractual demands. Signing on for a then-record, 10-year $252 Million dollar deal, A-Rod went on to set the league alight with his subsequent play. At atleast when it came to individual performances.

However, because of the tremendous financial load on the franchise; they were unable to strengthen in other areas and underperformed as a team despite great showings from Rodriguez. And despite their best efforts, the Rangers saw A-Rod move base to the New York Yankees without fulfilling his contract duration; breaking his own contract record in the process.

As time has gone on so have the finances in MLB, but Rodriguez nevertheless remains one of the top performers in Major League Baseball. But what do you think? Is his payout deserved? Should athletes have the option of getting a payout even after retiring?
