Speaking on a radio show, Votto spoke up about the major change he is making come 2022. Said Votto, “Just hitting the ball harder.”

Speaking in more detail, Votto talked about how important it was for him to get his marker as a hitter more effectively. Said Votto, “Emphasis on becoming a bit tougher to defend. If you’re hitting the ball harder, the defender has less reaction time, and especially with the shift still in play, it’s important to hit the ball hard as a left-handed hitter.”

Votto understands that there will be some tradeoffs to be made. Said Votto, “That comes with some swing and miss but [I’m] learning to embrace that also.”

Speaking more about why the change in playing style was needed, Votto was clear that is was down to the game developing differently. Said Votto, “I was at a place where my style of play just wasn’t effective. I’d hit a ball pretty hard and it would get swallowed up by the shift.”

Votto, however, seemed excited about the season ahead. “My style of play is pretty dated and I just had to get the software update so,” he added.
