MLB Could Deal Devastating Blow to Minor Leagues Through New CBA Proposal Amidst Lockout

Major League Baseball is currently going through an owners’ lockout. And even after two months of work stoppage in MLB, the owners and players haven’t reached the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. 

Now when the regular season is about to start, instead of finding a solution, the MLB owners have reportedly come up with a new proposal to MLB Players’ Association. And if reports are true, then this new proposal will directly impact the minor league players.

Recently, a week ago when MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the inclusion of two new rules in the 2022 season, it was in players’ favor. But the recent reports suggest that the owners are playing the big game. And with this, it will push the minor leagues in more dark, which is already in dark.

As per Jeff Passan of ESPN, Major League Baseball will propose the MLBPA to eliminate hundreds of jobs in their latest proposal. As of now, an MLB team can roster 180 domestic minor league players. But the recent proposal suggests that the owners want flexibility in the numbers. Now, they want to reduce it to only 150 players. And at the same time, they want to have an option to increase it too.

This is not the first time, MLB will be proposing the players’ association to control the size of their Domestic Reserve List. Earlier, the players’ association has rejected this idea multiple times. However, the owners are yet to propose it officially. But even if they do, the players’ association intends to reject it once again.

Lockout in MLB

After the 2021 season, the CBA deal between the owners and players expired on December 2. And since then, MLB is in a lockout. Recently, the two sides met a number of times, but they couldn’t find the solution.
