It is already January 31, almost two months since the lockout in MLB, despite that, owners and players have not agreed to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Given the lockout in MLB, teams, and players, both sides are facing difficulties for the upcoming season. And New York Mets are one of them, who are still not done with figuring out their squad for the next season.
With lockout still in force, no teams can negotiate a deal with any players or free agents during this time. The Mets are one team that is going through a massive rebuild phase after their disappointing 2021 season in MLB.

The Mets are probably the most eager ones among all the MLB sides for the lockout to end as soon as possible. Apart from adding some players, they are willing to let go of some of their current players in order to build a strong and competitive side.

Right before the lockout, the Mets had signed Max Scherzer, Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar into the squad. And with their inclusion, it is most unlikely that players like Jeff McNeil, Dom Smith, and J.D. Davis will get enough opportunity to play.
The Mets hunt for another pitcher
Even after the inclusion of veteran pitcher Max Scherzer, the Mets are still looking to add one more starting pitcher into their already formidable side. As per the MLB Trade Rumors, the Mets have a keen interest in free agents like Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, and Carlos Rodon.

And not to forget, Oakland Athletics are one of the few teams that are willing to listen to offers for their current rotation arms. They have some top pitchers like Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, and Chris Bassitt in their squad. And if available, the Luis Castillo of Cincinnati Reds could be the best option for the Mets.

Even after signing Max Scherzer (37), the Mets’ desperate need for another pitcher is evident. There is no denying that Scherzer will bring his ‘A’ game for the Mets, but his age and fitness will remain a drawback for the team. They already have some veteran pitchers like Jacob deGrom (33), Carlos Carrasco (35), and Taijuan Walker (30), who are reliable from a fitness and health perspective.
However, it remains a mystery who will be the next starting pitcher of the New York Mets.
