Fans know Wayne Gretzky as the Ice Hockey G.O.A.T., a loving family man, and a cheerful buddy for his peers. But few know that he harbored a bizarre wish to get into fights with his fellow players. Recently, a Facebook post captioned Gretzky’s quote while sharing a rare picture. To this, fans were left divided.

While talking about his views on brawls in hockey, the Great Gretzky shared a controversial opinion. Though not a physical player, Gretzky aspired to be one as is evident from his word. Let’s dig deeper to know more.

Recently, a page named Instigators Hockey shared a picture of Gretzky engaged in a fight and captioned it with –

“‘Sometimes people ask, ‘Are hockey fights real?’ I say, ‘If they weren’t, I’d get in more of them.’

The clip is from a fight between Wayne Gretzky and Neal Broten on December 22nd, 1982, when Gretzky’s Oilers played against the Minnesota North Stars. To this, followers quickly took to the comment section to express their thoughts. Aware of Gretzky’s methods, they wrote-

“wayne was honest not fighter”

“Gretsk fighting? LOL!”

“Saw Wayne in person when he was about fifty. He seemed quite a bit more imposing and taller than I’d pictured him. Sure he could have held his own just fine if he had to, and would have mopped the floor with most of us if he had a mind to.

That wasn’t him, not should it have been.”
“Pretty sure this was the one and only fight”.

Gretzky debunked hockey fights several times and wanted them to stop. The NHL has a long history of difficult and dangerous injuries that have often, been fatal.

The continuing saga of hockey fights

There are several other gruesome fights in NHL that left the audiences in woe. Apart from that other nasty confrontations took place like the incidents with Ryan Lindgren, Stan Jonathan, Raffi Torres, and so on. The list never ends as NHL officials blue-ticked the fights as a part of the ‘code’.

The referees are there to prevent clashes on the first hand but the authority wants the players to settle disputes on the field itself. The aggressor and the instigator are held responsible and sometimes face suspensions too. Albeit, this cannot stop the increasing number of fights in the sport as it takes everyone down with it, even the Great One.
