What makes a true champion, the so-called GOAT?  Is it the skills? Is it all the records? Is it complete dominance in their field during their playing days? Or is it the fact that even more than half a decade after retirement, winning a contest seems like a piece of cake? With Michael Phelps, all of the boxes tick, and especially the last one.

Michael Phelps recently took to Instagram to share a couple of pictures with his buddies on a golf course, presumably having a leisurely time besides playing golf. However, he also shared a small clip of a swimming race, the result of which, reinstated his status as the GOAT.

Taking to Instagram, Michael Phelps wrote, “Day one of a member/guest… never a bad day”, followed by a couple of emojis of a smiley face and the cup. The pictures in the golf course that accompanied the post, included Phelps and two other people who were standing in front of the bright blue sky. The fourth one, a clip, was of a swimming pool, presumably inside a hotel.

Phelps also wrote in his Instagram caption, “Ppl wanna race… I’m in!!! (video) #beyou”. Being the friendly sporting person that Phelps is, he accepted the challenge. He didn’t let the opportunity of competing in a swimming race, be it against anyone, pass by. The video was a reminder of why Phelps’ love and dominance for the sport, would never diminish.

The Flying Fish retired for the first time in 2012 after the London Olympics, but he soon made a comeback, 2 years later. He formally retired in 2016, after the Rio Olympics, signing off with 5 gold medals. Phelps has quite convincingly proven that he is one of the best swimmers, if not, the best swimmer of all time. But how about when he is pitted against fellow Olympians?

GOAT or not, Michael Phelps has inspired countless young swimmers

Is Michael Phelps the greatest Olympic athlete of all time? This a question that often comes up in discussions about the best athletes of all time. While the jury is still out on that (even though most might agree), a deep dive into his career and all his achievements, including 23 Olympic gold medals, throughout his life, leaves very little room to deny him that title.
